Liminal by WMC has been featured as a strategic project in De Route Naar Toekomstige Welvaart (translated title: The Road to Future Prosperity), the December 2025 independent advisory report by former ASML CEO Peter Wennink, commissioned by the Dutch government. The report calls for urgent, large-scale investments in innovation, clean energy, talent and infrastructure to safeguard future competitiveness of both the Netherlands and Europe more broadly.
Liminal’s project focuses on establishing an industrial-scale lithium refinery in the Port of Rotterdam, converting lithium intermediates into battery-grade lithium salts and fertilizer. Lithium refining is a critical step in the EV battery value chain that is currently dominated outside Europe, while demand from electric mobility and energy storage continues to accelerate.
By combining advanced chemical technology, port-based infrastructure and European industrial capabilities, Liminal aims to reduce strategic dependencies and strengthen Europe’s battery ecosystem. A patent has been filed to protect the core innovation behind the process.
Liminal is proud to be a part of the momentum for industrial renewal and strategic autonomy now clearly present in Europe. Interested in learning more or exploring collaboration? Please reach out via info@liminaldevelopment.com.
