Liminal

In partnership with a leading Dutch waste battery collection company, Liminal by WMC is developing a lithium-ion battery pre-treatment recycling and metal extraction facility in the Netherlands to promote circularity and support sustainability within the EV battery supply chain. By leveraging existing infrastructure, environmental permits and established feedstock relationships, the project is set to fast-track development.

The facility will process 2,000–3,000 tonnes per year of high-value mixed metal product (nickel, cobalt, manganese) and lithium carbonate from EV, portable, industrial and eBike batteries across multiple chemistries (NMC, LCO, NCA). We will also offer innovative batch processing for LFP batteries, with lithium carbonate and ferric phosphate as separate product streams.

Addressing Europe’s Growing Recycling Needs

As the volume of end-of-life EV batteries increases over the next decade, Europe faces a supply gap in recycling capacity. Local processing not only reduces logistics costs, but also streamlines permitting and ensures compliance with EU recycling mandates.

Liminal by WMC’s facility in the Netherlands is uniquely positioned to bridge this gap, supporting a sustainable, circular battery supply chain while securing the long-term recovery and valorisation of critical minerals.

Scalable, Safe, and Modular Recycling

This joint venture is focused on proven, modular and cost-competitive technology that meets the highest health and safety standards. The approach ensures the facility can be replicated as battery waste volumes grow, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in urban mining and sustainable resource recovery. Finally, the innovative and cost-efficient metal and lithium valorisation technology has the potential to be deployed on a global scale next to black mass production facilities.
